How to Start a Podcast for Business (That Actually Drives Sales)
Mar 30, 2026
If you’ve been thinking about how to start a podcast for business, or you already have one and it’s not leading to clients or revenue, I want to have a more honest conversation about what’s really going on beneath the surface.
Because most people don’t struggle with podcasting because they lack consistency. They struggle because their podcast was never designed to support their online business in the first place.
And I know that, because I’ve lived it.
The First Podcast I Started… and the 15 Downloads That Followed
When I launched my first podcast, I was genuinely excited about it. I had the idea, I had the energy, and I really believed that this was going to be the thing that helped me grow my online business.
I recorded it with a $25 Amazon microphone, I used my daughter’s baby sock as a pop filter, and I put it out into the world expecting that if I stayed consistent and created good content, everything else would fall into place.
In the first month, I got 15 downloads.
And if I’m being honest, it didn’t improve dramatically for a long time.
I kept showing up. I kept recording. I kept doing what I thought I was supposed to do. But what I didn’t understand yet was that I hadn’t actually built a podcast business. I had built a content platform.
There’s a difference.
Why Most Podcasts Don’t Grow an Online Business
When people decide to start a podcast for business, they usually begin with the same question: What should I talk about?
They choose a topic they enjoy, something they feel confident in, and something they can stay consistent with. And while that’s not wrong, it’s also not enough if your goal is to create online income.
Because content without direction doesn’t lead to growth.
It might lead to engagement. It might lead to downloads. But it doesn’t necessarily lead to sales.
And if your goal is to grow your online business, then your podcast needs to be designed differently from the beginning.
It needs to be part of your broader evergreen online marketing strategy, not something that exists separately from it.
The Shift That Changed Everything for Me
The moment things started to change in my business was when I stopped thinking about my podcast as something I needed to keep up with, and started thinking about it as something I was building intentionally.
Instead of asking, “What do I want to talk about?” I started asking, “Who is this for, and what are they moving toward?”
Instead of focusing on downloads, I started focusing on how my podcast connected to my offers and how it supported evergreen sales in my business.
Instead of creating content for the sake of staying visible, I started creating content that guided people toward a decision.
And that shift is what turned my podcast into something that actually contributed to my online income.
How to Start a Podcast for Business (The Right Way)
If I were starting again today, knowing what I know now, there are a few things I would do very differently.
I would start with the buyer, not the topic. That means getting clear on who you are speaking to and what they are actively looking for. When your podcast speaks directly to someone who is already thinking about growth, change, or investment, your content lands in a completely different way.
I would build the podcast around an offer from the beginning. Not in a way that feels heavy or overly sales-focused, but in a way that is clear. Your listener should understand what you do, how you help, and what the next step is. Without that clarity, even the best content won’t move your business forward.
And I would design every episode to lead somewhere. Not every episode needs to sell, but every episode should guide your listener through a thought process that naturally connects to your work. This is what turns a podcast into a true podcast business, rather than just another platform you are trying to maintain.
Where Podcasting Fits Into Evergreen Marketing
One of the reasons podcasting works so well for an online business is because it naturally supports evergreen online marketing.
Your episodes don’t disappear after 24 hours like a social post. They continue to be discovered through search, recommendations, and platforms over time. When your podcast is aligned with your business, it becomes an asset that continues to bring in the right people long after you’ve recorded the episode.
This is also why podcasting can be such a powerful tool for evergreen sales. It allows you to build trust at scale, without needing to constantly be online or creating new content every day.
When done well, your podcast becomes one of the most effective ways to grow your online business in a way that feels sustainable.
If You’re Starting (or Starting Again)
If you’re in a place where you’re trying to start online business growth that feels more aligned, or you’re rethinking how your podcast fits into your overall strategy, I want you to know this:
You don’t need to do more.
You don’t need to chase every new tactic or platform.
You just need to build this differently.
Because when you start a podcast for business with the right foundation, it changes what’s possible. It turns your podcast into something that supports your business, your income, and your life—not something you constantly have to keep up with.
And that shift is where everything begins.
