#019: 6 Game-Changing Lessons from My First Mastermind Experience
Apr 21, 2025
I just got back from my very first in-person mastermind experience hosted by the amazing Amy McLaren—and I’m still processing how much it cracked something open in me.
You know how you can know something in your head, but it doesn’t fully land in your heart until you’re in the right room, with the right people, having the right conversations?
That’s exactly what happened to me over three days in a cozy room full of powerhouse women who are building bold, brilliant, purpose-driven businesses—and not waiting for anyone’s permission to do it their way.
This mastermind wasn’t just about strategy (though there was plenty of that). It was about alignment. Community. Clarity. And a whole lot of truth-telling.
Here are six lessons that hit me hard—and I think they might just do the same for you.
1. We’re hiring in the wrong order.
Every woman in that room had help at home. Not just in the business. In the house.
Childcare. Cleaning. Meal prep. Support.
And it hit me: I was the only one who didn’t.
We’ve been taught to scale our business first and ask for help later. But the truth is, we can’t grow sustainably when we’re building in the gaps between drop-offs, dishes, and deadlines.
It’s time we stop wearing burnout like a badge of honour.
2. Messaging isn’t optional—it is your business.
If your message isn’t clear, nothing else will be.
Stu McLaren led us through his messaging map (from his book Predictable Profit, which I highly recommend), and reminded us that surface-level copy doesn’t convert. Speaking directly to the internal struggles your people are facing? That’s the gold.
And when he gave me personal feedback that helped me refine my message? I honestly felt like I’d won the messaging lottery.
3. The perfect content formula doesn’t exist.
Two women shared two completely opposite Instagram strategies—and both were right.
One was all about structure. The other? Pure intuition.
And that’s the point: there’s no one-size-fits-all way to grow online.
So if you’re tired of trying to follow someone else’s strategy, here’s your permission slip to build a content rhythm that feels good for you. (Also, hot tip I learned... when you don’t know what to post, start with gratitude. It shifts everything.)
4. Want your voice to get louder? Get offline.
Stepping away from my screen gave me space to hear myself again.
Since 2020, I’ve been unlearning the habit of sounding like everyone else—and that clarity came back in full force when I unplugged for a few days and got in the room with women who get it.
Seeing two of my Legacy clients in person filled my cup in ways I didn’t even know I needed. And it made me even more excited for our Legacy retreat this October (which, if you’re curious about, you can apply here).
5. Learning isn’t enough. We need room to practice.
One of my biggest breakthroughs came during a hot seat session. I asked for feedback I knew I needed. It felt vulnerable. But I got it—and I applied it. Immediately.
Too many programs are built around consumption without application. That’s changing inside Legacy. I’m now carving out intentional space each month to practice what we teach—because real growth happens when you implement, not just when you listen.
6. Building a business takes work. And that’s not a bad thing.
Every single woman in that mastermind worked her business. With focus. Intention. Respect.
There were breaks, yes. But no one was phoning it in.
That whole “3-days-a-week-from-a-beach” narrative? It’s not just unrealistic—it’s dismissive of the passion, planning, and perseverance it actually takes to grow something meaningful.
There’s no shame in showing up for your business like it matters. Because it does.
You’re not just building a business. You’re building a better world.
This mastermind experience reminded me of the kind of leader I want to be—and the kind of community I want to build.
And if any part of this resonated with you? I hope you’ll give this week’s podcast episode a listen. I go even deeper into these six lessons and what they’ve changed for me already.
And be sure to come back on Wednesday for Episode 22—I’m sitting down with Masha Kay to talk about the overlooked key to growing your business without burning out. You’re going to love it.
Until then, friend... build boldly. You’ve got this.
